Imagine at 70 years old, you are going to bed on an empty stomach, and it is not just you alone but together with three of your grandchildren with whom the eldest is only 7 years old.

This is the sad reality for over 20,000 old people in Kisumu, Kenya who face isolation, neglect, and abuse while also becoming primary caregivers for their grandchildren.

For over1-year, RIEKO an organization that is based in a flood prone zone has been working with the elderly, young people and children with an aim of promoting intergenerational care. Our main activity has been on production of nutritious indigenous vegetables and access to quality education for both the children and their grandparents.

We have been offering them one meal per day a factor that has not only led to increase in turn out of the children at RIEKO school but also enhanced interconnectedness.

During the 2024 April floods in Kenya, our vegetable farms were swept away leaving us unable to sustain our lunch program.

So far we have been able to set up 1 vertical garden. Now, we are seeking for your help to build 12 vertical gardens at RIEKO so we can grow fresh indigenous vegetables and bring back our lunch program.

We are currently having over 45 elderly persons and over 80 children since our inception in 2022. These vertical gardens will do more than just provide food. They will create a living classroom where children and the elderly learn together.

These gardens will give our elders a sense of purpose, reduce their isolation, and offer the younger generation a hands-on education in sustainable farming and life skills, reinforcing the bond between the different generations.

To make this happen, we need to raise US$600. This will cover seeds, tools, fencing, and the dap liners for vertical structures construction. Every dollar will go directly toward rebuilding our garden and restoring our lunch program.
