kanthari is a leadership program that empowers social visionaries from marginalized communities around the world. Based in Kerala, India, kanthari trains individuals who have overcome adversity, providing them with the tools and skills to create ethical social ventures. The organization’s focus is on innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, offering a safe space for participants to hone their skills and launch their initiatives aimed at social change. Since its inception, kanthari has trained and supported hundreds of changemakers who have gone on to create impactful solutions in their home countries.

The SPREAD THE SPICE FESTIVAL 2024 is a platform where 29 changemakers from 13 countries will present their ventures addressing social issues such as sustainability, women’s rights, and education. Held at Manaveeyam Street, Trivandrum, Kerala, the event invites participants from all walks of life to interact with these social entrepreneurs. Through stalls, demonstrations, and discussions, attendees can learn about projects like clean energy initiatives, eco-friendly waste management, child protection, and more. This festival is about celebrating diversity and innovation, showing how individuals are creating positive changes in their communities. Attendees can expect to be inspired by stories of resilience, creativity, and hope.

As the SPREAD THE SPICE FESTIVAL 2024 is a walk-in event, no formal application is required. Simply arrive at the venue, Manaveeyam Street, Trivandrum, on 11-12 October 2024, and participate in the activities, presentations, and discussions. While the event is free, it’s advised to come early to get the most out of the festival, as the crowd is expected to be large. Meet Some of the Changemakers:

Susanna Simango from Malawi

Susanna co-founded Village Solar, a project supporting marginalized women in becoming solar entrepreneurs. After experiencing the challenges of rural life without electricity, she wanted to bring clean energy solutions to the people most affected by energy poverty. Her stall at the festival will showcase solar innovations aimed at lighting up rural villages.

Chipo Chikomo from Zimbabwe

Founder of Nhanga Trust, Chipo’s venture fights period poverty by creating washable, affordable menstrual products. Inspired by her own life experience in rural Zimbabwe, Chipo is on a mission to make menstrual health accessible and break taboos around women’s hygiene. Visitors to her stall can learn more about how her work is empowering women in remote areas.

Caren Jobita from Kenya

Coming from the Nyalenda Slum in Kenya, Caren started Eco Alchemy, a project focused on waste reduction through the use of Black soldier flies. By incubating these insects, Caren aims to address issues like pollution, unemployment, and food insecurity. At the festival, you can discover how insects are being used in innovative ways to create sustainable solutions.

Mala Sonawadekar from India

Mala, a child protection lawyer, started Cocoon Homes to provide safe spaces for children in care homes, many of whom are victims of abuse. Her stall will showcase her efforts in creating nurturing environments where children feel safe and cared for. Learn about her unique approach to trauma counseling and volunteer engagement.
